Seeds of Grace

A surprising and enlightening assessment of AA--its basic tenets and how it works on the spirit--by a nun and recovering alcoholic. When Sister Molly Monahan joined Alcoholics Anonymous she was looking for the help and support she needed to stop drinking. But what she found was something more, something that surprised her: a deeper spirituality than she had ever experienced in her religious community. How could a nonreligious group espousing the most basic of spiritual beliefs have anything to teach a nun who had already spent three decades steeped in the values, rituals, and traditions of the contemplative life? The mystery of the effectiveness of AA has yet to be explained. This book looks at that question in new, interesting, and important ways. In Seeds of Grace, Sister Molly Monahan traces her progress through the Twelve Steps and identifies the lessons that Alcoholics Anonymous has to instruct all of us about grace, forgiveness, community, and, in AA parlance, 'the God of our understanding.' Along the way, through a series of meditations, she shares her insights on why AA works, how it works, and how it has changed her life and the lives of millions of people.

Alcoholics Anonymous Variorum

The evolution of, and changes made to, the text of Alcoholics Anonymous.        For distribution in The USA only. Many are of the belief that the text of Alcoholics Anonymous has always been left unaltered but that hasn't been the case. Here we have researched the changes made to the Big Book® and gathered these changes into a variorum. Variorum is a latin word that has come to describe a collection of the various renditions of a single work. Originally the phrase used was cum notis variorum meaning 'with notes by various people.' In literary scholarship the various extant versions of significant works were frequently collected and the observations of scholars and contemporaries (the various people) were added. In time the term variorum was applied to any compilation of the various versions of the same basic text. Given that we have no desire to editorialize or to add opinions this is a work of the latter variety. We simply present the changes made to this significant book and make no attempt at interpretation - we feel any judgments are properly left to the reader. We have endeavored to include every text difference without any editorial decisions in regard to what to include or exclude. The first section shows the evolution made in changing the stern directions found in the manuscript to the suggestions of the modern text. Most of those interested in this volume will know the changes from the manuscript were quite extensive. Here we document the changes in a format which we hope proves easy to study and will give the reader a feeling of the founder's editorial process. The second part of this volume catalogs the hundreds of lesser known changes which have been made to the text since the first printing of the first edition of the Big Book. Careful research has revealed the many changes made throughout the early years of AA. This was before the General Service Conference decided that no further changes would be made without the consent of 3/4 of the groups registered with the General Service Office. There are many changes which were seemingly inconsequential grammatical changes but they are all included in our effort to avoid editorial judgment. There are, however, many substantive changes that will likely prove to be of interest to many students of the text.
