Principles of Righteousness: Finney's Lessons on Romans, Volume I

The Letter to the Romans stands as Paul's most significant message on how to begin and maintain a loving relationship with God and others. The Holy Spirit often leads those seeking to understand the essentials of saving and sanctifying faith to read Romans. Beginning with 'Principles of Righteousness,' Finney's Lessons on Romans presents an authoritative collection of Finney's teachings on how to live for Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Charles G. Finney became the greatest American preacher and theologian of the Nineteenth-Century. He traveled as an evangelist and revivalist in America and abroad, served in settled pastorates, taught as a professor of theology, promoted the abolition of slavery and equal rights, helped found and served as President of Oberlin College. Just as one cannot understand the Great Awakening without studying Jonathan Edwards, one cannot understand the great revivals and the theological and social movements in Nineteenth-Century America without studying Charles G. Finney. Because Finney's teachings remained true to the Bible and common sense, his message transformed thousands. In this new Finney's Principles series book, the Study Questions by the editor and the Commentary by Henry Cowles will help you apply Finney's teachings. The Twenty-Fifth Anniversary Edition of 'Principles of Righteousness: Finney's Lessons on Romans, Volume I' will continue the Finney's Principles series, which began with the publication of Finney's 'Principles of Prayer' in 1980. L.G. Parkhurst, Jr., the compiler and editor of the Finney's Principles series, will complete Finney's Lessons on Romans, with 'Principles of Peace: Volume II' and 'Principles of Joy in the Holy Spirit: Volume III'. Manual of Egyptian Archaeology and Guide to the Study of Antiqui

Excerpt: AND Guide to the Study of Antiquities in Egypt. FOR THE USE OF STUDENTS AND TRAVELLERS. BY G. MASPERO, D.C.L. OXON. MEMBER OF INSTITUTE OF FRANCE; PROFESSOR AT THE COLL?GE DE FRANCE; EX-DIRECTOR GENERAL OF EGYPTIAN MUSEUMS. TRANSLATED BY AMELIA B. EDWARDS. NEW EDITION, REVISED AND ENLARGED BY THE AUTHOR. With Three Hundred and Nine Illustrations. 1895. PREFACE TO THE FOURTH AND REVISED EDITION. Notwithstanding the fact that Egyptology is now recognised as a science, an exact and communicable knowledge of whose existence and scope it behoves all modern culture to take cognisance, this work of M. Maspero still remains the Handbook of Egyptian Archaeology. But Egyptology is as yet in its infancy; whatever their age, Egyptologists will long die young. Every year, almost every month, fresh material for the study is found, fresh light is thrown upon it by the progress of excavation, exploration, and research. Hence it follows that, in the course of a few years, the standard text-books require considerable addition and modification if they are to be of the greatest value to students, who must always start from the foremost vantage-ground. The increasing demand for the Egyptian Archaeology by English and American tourists, as well as students, decided the English publishers to issue a new edition in as light and portable a form as possible. This edition is carefully corrected, and contains the enlarged letterpress and many fresh illustrations necessary for incorporating within the book adequate accounts of the main archaeological results of recent Egyptian excavations. M. Maspero has himself revised the work, indicated all the numerous additions, and qualified the expression of any views which he has seen reason to modify in the course of his researches during the past eight years. By the headings of the pages, the descriptive titles of the illustrations, and a minute revision of the index, much has been done to facilitate the use of the volume as a book...

Personal Recollections of Birmingham and Birmingham Men

Excerpt: OF BIRMINGHAM AND BIRMINGHAM MEN. REPRINTED FROM THE BIRMINGHAM DAILY MAIL, WITH REVISIONS, CORRECTIONS, AND ADDITIONS. By E. EDWARDS. BIRMINGHAM: MIDLAND EDUCATIONAL TRADING COMPANY LIMITED. 1877. [All Rights Reserved] These sketches, with the signature S.D.R., were originally published in the Birmingham Daily Mail newspaper. The earliest were written, as their title indicated, entirely from memory. Afterwards, the title was no longer strictly accurate, it was retained for the purpose of showing the connection of the series. It must be understood, however, that for many of the facts and dates in the later sketches the writer is indebted to others. The whole series has been very carefully revised, and some errors have been rectified. The writer would have preferred to remain incognito, but he is advised that, as the authorship is now generally known, it would be mere affectation to withhold his name. He hopes shortly to commence the publication of another series. December, 1877. CONTENTS. FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF BIRMINGHAM. THE BULL RING RIOTS, 1839. GOSSIP ABOUT ROYALTY. Edmonds John Smith, Solicitor FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF BIRMINGHAM. It is a fine autumnal morning in the year 1837. I am sitting on the box seat of a stage coach, in the yard of the Bull-and-Mouth, St. Martins-le-Grand, in the City of London. The splendid gray horses seem anxious to be off, but their heads are held by careful grooms. The metal fittings of the harness glitter in the early sunlight. Jew pedlar-boys offer me razors and penknives at prices unheard of in the shops. Porters bring carpet-bags and strange-lookin...
